Qi Men Focus Symbols (Yong Shen): What to Read for Career, Wealth and Love
Published · Last updated
What Is a Focus Symbol?
The focus symbol (Yong Shen, 用神) is the element on the chart that represents the matter being asked about. The same Qi Men chart is read through different symbols for different questions — choose the wrong symbol and every conclusion that follows is wrong.

Three Dimensions for Judging a Symbol
- Strength: a symbol whose element is in season (supported by the month and hour) is strong; one being overcome is weak;
- Palace: the Five-Element relationship between the symbol and the palace it lands in — entering the tomb or being punished is inauspicious;
- Combination: the formation created by the star, gate, deity and stems sharing the palace — Life Gate + Wu + Chief Deity in one palace is the classic wealth formation.
How Beginners Can Practice
Cast one chart a day for a small, concrete question: select the focus symbol and write your own judgment first, then check it against the reading from an AI Qi Men charting tool. The AI annotates every palace’s star-gate-deity-stem combination with a fortune score — an efficient sparring partner.
