What Is My Chinese Element? Find It From Your Birth Year and Birthday

The quick answer: your birth year’s last digit

The Chinese calendar gives every year a heavenly stem, and each stem belongs to one of the five elements. The stems run in pairs, so the last digit of your birth year tells you your element:

For example, 1985 ends in 5, so it is a Yin Wood year (a Wood Ox). 2027 ends in 7, so it is a Yin Fire year: the Year of the Fire Goat.

Born in January or early February? The Chinese year starts at Lunar New Year, not January 1. If you were born before Lunar New Year, use the previous year’s digit. BaZi astrology is stricter and switches at Li Chun, the start of spring, around February 4 (details).

The deeper answer: your Day Master

Practitioners of BaZi (Four Pillars astrology) say your birth year describes your background, while the heavenly stem of your birth day describes you. That stem is called the Day Master, and it is what a Chinese astrologer means by “your element.”

There are ten Day Masters, one yin and one yang for each element, and each has a traditional image:

How the elements interact

The five elements are not personality boxes. They are phases that feed and restrain each other.

The generating cycle (each supports the next): Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. Wood fuels fire, fire leaves ash that becomes earth, earth yields metal, metal collects condensation, and water nourishes wood.

The controlling cycle (each restrains another): Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood. Roots hold soil, earth dams water, water puts out fire, fire melts metal, and metal cuts wood.

In a full chart, balance matters more than strength. An astrologer looks at which elements are too strong or missing across all four pillars, and that shapes advice on careers, timing, colors and directions.

Year element vs. zodiac animal element

Many websites list a fixed element for each animal (the Rat is Water, the Horse is Fire, and so on). That is the element of the earthly branch, and it never changes. The element people usually mean by “my Chinese element” is the element of the heavenly stem, which changes every two years. That is why there are Metal Horses, Water Horses and Fire Horses: same animal, different year element.
