How the 12 Months of 2027 Are Divided

In Four Pillars and annual readings, a “month” is neither a Gregorian month nor a lunar month. It is a solar month bounded by twelve “Jie” terms: Start of Spring, Awakening of Insects, Clear and Bright, Start of Summer, Grain in Ear, Minor Heat, Start of Autumn, White Dew, Cold Dew, Start of Winter, Major Snow and Minor Cold. The Ding Wei year of 2027 begins at Start of Spring, so month 1 is the Tiger month (Ren Yin) and month 12 is the Ox month (Gui Chou), which ends at Start of Spring on Feb 4, 2028.

Every month has an earthly branch. Put your sign next to the month’s branch and tradition looks at only a few basic relationships:

  • Six Harmony: the closest, smoothest partner, such as Rat and Ox or Tiger and Pig;
  • Three Harmony: like-minded and easy to borrow strength from, in four groups: Monkey-Rat-Dragon, Tiger-Horse-Dog, Snake-Rooster-Ox, Pig-Rabbit-Goat;
  • Clash: the opposite branch, six places away, such as Rat and Horse or Ox and Goat, meaning more movement and a disrupted rhythm;
  • Own month: the month whose branch matches your sign. Tradition advises watching your mood and health and favoring steadiness over speed.

How each sign relates to the year as a whole (the Goat offends Tai Sui, the Ox clashes with it, and so on) is covered in 2027 Fire Goat zodiac outlook. This page looks only at the months.

An example: for a Rabbit, month 9 (the Geng Xu month, from Oct 8) is the Six Harmony month, months 6 (Ding Wei) and 10 (Xin Hai) are Three Harmony months, month 8 (Ji You) is the clash, and month 2 (Gui Mao) is the own month.

Two Months Worth Singling Out

Month 6 (the Ding Wei month, roughly Jul 7 to Aug 7). The month’s pillar is the same as the year’s, Ding Wei, which tradition calls “Fu Yin” (a repeated pillar), said to bring repetition and old matters coming back. The Ox already clashes with the year’s Tai Sui, and this month adds a monthly clash on top; the Goat is in its own year and now its own month. Schools differ on all this, so treat it as a reminder to leave more room that month, not as fate.

Month 1 (Tiger) and month 12 (Ox). The first and the last months straddle solar-term changes, so it is easy to mix up the “year” and the “month”. Month 1 starts at Start of Spring on Feb 4, two days before Lunar New Year (Feb 6). Month 12 is already in 2028 on the calendar but still belongs to the Ding Wei year.

How to Put the Months to Use

A month gives you the backdrop, not a prediction of what will happen in it. You can use it like this:

  1. Find your favorable and clash months. Favorable months suit launching, partnering and deciding; in a clash month, slow down and re-read any long-term commitment;
  2. Don’t treat a clash month as a bad month. A clash also means movement, and a move or job change you planned ahead can go well in one;
  3. Then pick the day and hour with Qi Men. Within one month, days and hours differ a lot. For something important, cast Qi Men Dun Jia charts for a few candidate times and compare the door and star combinations. To start with an everyday case, see which day suits signing a contract.

FAQ

When does each month of 2027 start in Chinese astrology?

At the solar terms, not on the 1st. The Tiger month starts at Start of Spring (Feb 4, 09:46 Beijing time), and the last month, the Ox month, ends at Start of Spring in 2028. Overseas, convert to local time: in New York, Start of Spring falls on Feb 3 at 8:46 pm. See when the 2027 year really starts.

Is my clash month always bad?

No. A clash means more movement and a disrupted rhythm. It can be pressure, but it can also be a change you chose, such as a job move or a house move. The traditional advice is to sign fewer long-term commitments in a clash month, avoid irreversible decisions, or plan the change in advance.

Why does each sign have only 3 favorable months?

Each sign has one Six Harmony branch and two Three Harmony branches, which match 3 of the 12 months. A Rat, for example, is favored in the Ox month (Six Harmony) and in the Dragon and Monkey months (Three Harmony), and clashes with the Horse month.

If I know the month, do I still need to pick a day and hour?

Yes. The month is only the backdrop. For the day and the hour, look at the chart for that moment: cast Qi Men Dun Jia charts for a few candidate times and choose the strongest one.
