What Is BaZi? A Beginner's Guide to Chinese Four Pillars Astrology
Published
BaZi in one sentence
BaZi (八字, literally “eight characters”) takes the moment you were born and writes it in the Chinese calendar’s stem-and-branch notation: four pillars of two characters each, eight characters in all. Practitioners read those characters to describe personality, strengths, relationships and the timing of life’s phases.
The four pillars
| Pillar | Comes from | Traditionally describes |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Birth year (from Li Chun, the start of spring) | Ancestry, family background, early childhood |
| Month | Birth month (by solar term) | Parents, upbringing, career environment |
| Day | Birth day | You (the day stem) and your spouse (the day branch) |
| Hour | Two-hour period of birth | Children, later life, inner ambitions |
Each pillar has a heavenly stem on top (one of ten, such as Jia or Bing) and an earthly branch below (one of the twelve zodiac animals). Your familiar zodiac sign is just the year branch.
The Day Master: the character that is you
The stem of the day pillar is called the Day Master (日主). Every other character in the chart is read in relation to it. A Yang Wood Day Master (Jia), for instance, is pictured as a tall tree, while Yin Water (Gui) is pictured as rain or dew. See all ten in What Is My Chinese Element?
Reading the chart: element balance
Each of the eight characters carries one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. A practitioner asks:
- Is the Day Master strong or weak? It depends on how much of the chart supports it, and on the season of birth.
- Which elements are excessive or missing? Balance matters more than strength.
- Which elements help? These “useful elements” guide advice on careers, colors, directions and timing.
The other characters relate to the Day Master in five ways, traditionally called the Ten Gods:
| Relationship to the Day Master | Traditional theme |
|---|---|
| Same element | Peers, siblings, competition |
| Element the Day Master produces | Creativity, expression, output |
| Element the Day Master controls | Wealth, resources, pursuits |
| Element that controls the Day Master | Authority, career, discipline |
| Element that produces the Day Master | Support, learning, mentors |
Luck pillars: the timing of life
Beyond the four birth pillars, BaZi derives a sequence of luck pillars (大运), each lasting about ten years. As each new decade’s elements interact with the birth chart, some periods feel supportive and others demanding. Each calendar year adds a further layer; 2027, for example, is a Fire Goat year.
What you need for an accurate chart
- Birth date, from the certificate;
- Birth time, as precise as possible, since the hour pillar changes every two hours;
- Birthplace, because the traditional hour is based on the sun’s position there (True Solar Time), not on the clock.

FAQ
What if I don't know my birth time?
You can still read three pillars, six of the eight characters, including the Day Master. Practitioners call this a three-pillar reading. You lose detail about later life and children, but the core of the chart remains.
Is BaZi the same as the Chinese zodiac?
No. Your zodiac animal is just one of the eight characters, the branch of the year pillar. BaZi reads all eight, and it treats the day pillar as more personal than the year.
Is BaZi accurate?
BaZi is a centuries-old interpretive tradition, not a scientifically proven predictor. Many people find it a useful framework for reflecting on their strengths and planning their timing. The calculation itself is exact calendar math.
