What Is Zi Wei Dou Shu? Purple Star Astrology vs BaZi and Qi Men (Beginner's Guide)

Zi Wei Dou Shu in one sentence
Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数), often called Purple Star Astrology, is a Chinese birth-chart tradition said to date from the Song dynasty. It takes your lunar birthday and birth hour and places more than a hundred stars into twelve palaces. Each palace stands for one part of life and each star has its own character. Reading a chart means asking which stars sit in which palace.
Compared with BaZi, a Zi Wei chart reads like a map of your life: career in the Career palace, money in the Wealth palace, love in the Spouse palace. That clarity is why it is so popular in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan.
The twelve palaces
| Palace | Traditionally about |
|---|---|
| Life (命宫) | Your character, gifts and overall pattern (the most important) |
| Siblings | Brothers and sisters, partners |
| Spouse | Love, marriage, the kind of partner you attract |
| Children | Children, younger people, creativity |
| Wealth | How you earn and spend |
| Health | Traditionally constitution; today usually read as stress and routine |
| Travel | Going out, life away from home, the impression you give |
| Friends | Friends, colleagues, people who work for you |
| Career | Work and how you work |
| Property | Home, family, real estate |
| Fortune | Inner life, interests, enjoyment |
| Parents | Parents, elders, bosses |
There is also a Body Palace, read together with the Life Palace: traditionally the Life Palace shows what you are born with and the Body Palace where your effort goes later.
The fourteen main stars
Fourteen main stars set the basic character of a palace:
- Zi Wei (emperor): self-respect, firm views. Tian Fu (treasury): steady, careful.
- Tai Yang (sun): warm, outgoing. Tai Yin (moon): sensitive, reserved.
- Wu Qu (wealth): practical, decisive. Tian Tong (contentment): gentle, easy-going.
- Tian Ji: clever, a planner. Tian Liang (protector): mature, caring.
- Lian Zhen: strong personality. Tian Xiang: fair, a coordinator.
- Tan Lang: many talents, sociable. Ju Men: eloquent, analytical.
- Qi Sha: independent, daring. Po Jun: wants change and new starts.
Minor stars such as Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu, You Bi, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo add detail.
The four transformations
The heavenly stem of your birth year transforms four stars:
- Lu (祿, prosperity): ease, resources, good connections.
- Quan (權, power): control, ability, leadership.
- Ke (科, recognition): reputation, helpful people, order.
- Ji (忌, obstacle): attachment, where things take extra effort (not simply “bad”).
The palaces where these four land are often the areas of life you feel most strongly about.
Ten-year periods
Life is divided into ten-year periods (大限), each falling in one palace. If your period from 33 to 42 sits in the Career palace, work tends to be the focus of that decade. Each year adds another layer on top.
Zi Wei Dou Shu, BaZi and Qi Men Dun Jia
| Zi Wei Dou Shu | BaZi | Qi Men Dun Jia | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Based on | Moment of birth (lunar calendar) | Moment of birth (stems and branches) | Moment you ask or act |
| Main tools | Twelve palaces, stars, four transformations | Stems, branches, five elements | Nine palaces: doors, stars, deities |
| Good for | Character and life, area by area | Element balance and life rhythm | Timing and direction of an action now |
They complement each other: Zi Wei Dou Shu and BaZi describe who you are and which season of life you are in; Qi Men tells you how to go about something right now.
What you need for an accurate chart
- Birth date: solar or lunar, the calculator converts it.
- Birth hour: the most important input; a different hour moves the Life Palace.
- Birthplace: the hour follows True Solar Time at your birthplace, not the clock. This matters most if you were born outside China or during daylight saving time; see Why True Solar Time matters.

Good to know
Zi Wei Dou Shu is a cultural tradition. There is no scientific evidence that it predicts the future, and schools differ on some stars and transformations. Use it as one way of looking at yourself, not for medical, legal or major financial decisions.

FAQ
Which is more accurate, Zi Wei Dou Shu or BaZi?
Both are centuries-old interpretive traditions, not scientifically validated methods of prediction, so neither is 'more accurate'. BaZi works with stems, branches and the five elements and reads abstractly; Zi Wei Dou Shu splits life into twelve palaces that you read one by one, which beginners often find easier. Many people use both.
Can I get a Zi Wei chart without knowing my birth time?
Not really. The Life Palace depends on the lunar month and the birth hour, so a different hour moves every palace. If you only know roughly when you were born, draw the two neighbouring hours and compare them, or start with the three pillars of BaZi you can know.
Is an empty Life Palace bad?
No. A Life Palace without a main star is read by borrowing the main stars of the opposite palace (Travel). People with this structure are often described as adaptable and shaped by their surroundings. It is a structure, not a verdict.
I was born outside China. Do I convert my birth time to Beijing time?
No, but it should be converted to True Solar Time at your birthplace: local time zone and daylight saving at the time, corrected for longitude. Qimena's Zi Wei calculator does this automatically.
